Congressman Kline Receives Teach For America Congressional Champion Award
Washington, February 5, 2016—Rep. John Kline (R-MN) today was presented with the Teach For America Congressional Champion Award for his continued efforts to expand educational opportunities for students in Minnesota and across the nation. Kline was one of 12 members of Congress to be honored by Teach For America CEO Elisa Villanueva Beard and founder Wendy Kopp at a luncheon on Wednesday, February 3 at the Capitol Complex.
“Our Congressional champions have played an instrumental role in growing Teach For America’s impact in our first 25 years. Their support for critical funding and key policy provisions has helped expand educational opportunity for children growing up in poverty across the country and inspired thousands of individuals to join the fight for educational equity and excellence,” said Teach For America CEO Elisa Villanueva Beard. “I am thankful for leaders like Congressman Kline who are committed to ensuring that all children in this nation have the opportunity to attain an excellent education.”
Kline, the Chairman of the Education and the Workforce Committee, was honored for his unwavering support for Teach For America in Minnesota and Washington, D.C. He has demonstrated unparalleled leadership on ensuring the future of high quality alternative certification programs.
Teach For America-Twin Cities was established in 2009 to recruit and develop a diverse corps of outstanding college graduates and professionals to make an initial two-year commitment to teach in high-need schools and become lifelong leaders in the effort to end educational inequity.
More than 600 alumni live and work in Minnesota, and well over 150 of them lead at the classroom, school, network, and district level every day. In the annual Star Tribune list of Minnesota schools that are “Beating the Odds” for math and reading, four out of 10 on each list are led by Teach For America alumni and/or have a critical mass of corps member or alumni teachers.
